England and Wales
In England and Wales Civil Registration for marriages began in 1837. Typically the information on a marriage certificate will include the date and place of marriage, the names, ages and marital status of the bride and groom, Occupations and Addresses of both parties, the names and occupations of both the bride and grooms fathers, the witnesses present and the person who solomnised the marriage.
Note* It is worth mentioning that spouses names are not usually recorded on the GRO Marriage Indexes before about 1910 so if the marriage occured prior to this you will have to search for bride and groom separately and check that they have a matching District, Vol and Page No. It will save you making costly mistakes when ordering certificates.
If ordering Marriage certificate through the General Register Office using standard It will cost around £7.00 if you know the GRO Index Ref and about £10.00 if you don't. If you use the GRO 24 hour priority service it will cost you between £23.00 - £26.00 depending on wether or not you supply the GRO Index Ref NO.

You can only view Scottish Marriages on-line if the marriage falls betwee the years 1855 and 1933. If the marriage occurs after 1933 you can apply for an extract through the General Register Office for Scotland.

Civil Registration for marriages in Scotland began on the 1st January 1855. The only way to view scottish marriage entries on-line is through the scotlands people website using a pay as you go credit system. The information in a scottish marriage entry usually comprises of the date and place of the marriage Names of the bride and groom, their rank or professions, their marital status and sometimes previous married names they have been known by. You also find the bride and grooms addresses and the names and occupations of their fathers, along with the names and maiden names of their mothers. Witnesses names will be recorded and the date and place the marriage was registered as well as the registrars name.
Note* If you are searching for anyone on the Scotlands people website do use the soundex function as it can really help to find alternate spellings and names that sound similar when spoken.
